Pontardulais Town Band are serious about the future of brass musicianship, and we have an excellent provision for beginners and learners of all ages and abilities.
The Training Band is fortunate to be under the direction of Kevin Shanklin, an experienced performer, conductor and educator. The Training Band is a vital part of musical life at Bont, and performs regularly with the Senior Band as well as an ensemble in its own right. The Training Band takes part in contests and we are very proud of their successes.
The Training Band rehearses on Sundays 5:30pm-6:30pm at the band room in Pontardulais.
The Beginners’ Group, also under the direction of Kevin Shanklin, provides an opportunity for those wishing to start playing a brass instrument. Instruments are provided by the band and no experience or knowledge of music is required.

Musical Director – Kevin Shanklin
Kevin began playing the trumpet at the age of 9 in school with Tim Bourne. He then started his Brass Banding with Pembroke Borough Band in 2002 and began competing with Goodwick Brass Band in 2004.
Whilst studying in Pembrokeshire, in 2006 Kevin had solo success in the Texaco Music Festival and was awarded 1st place in the Open Brass category.
Kevin went on to study for a Bachelor of Music Degree in Cardiff University in 2006. Whilst in Cardiff, Kevin continued his trumpet studies under the tutorship of Martin McHale. He also enjoyed the opportunities of playing with various orchestras, ensembles and brass bands. During his time at university, he had solo success in the concerto competition where he was awarded the opportunity to play a solo with the Cardiff University Chamber Orchestra in Llandaff Cathedral before completing his studies.
In 2009, Kevin moved to Berkshire to undertake a peripatetic teaching post with the Berkshire Maestros Music Service and joined Sandhurst Silver Band, where he played front row in the Championship Section. He enjoyed success with Sandhurst, winning multiple local contests.
Kevin moved back home to Pembrokeshire in 2012 to undertake the role of peripatetic brass teacher with Pembrokeshire Music Service and joined Goodwick Brass, where he had more success, winning multiple local contests, being awarded the best Soprano Cornet in the 1st section SEWBBA local contest in Merthyr, as well as three trips to the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain Finals in Cheltenham, of which the band won the Second and First Section competitions.
In 2017 Kevin joined Pontardulais Town Band on Soprano Cornet and has enjoyed recent success with the band in the Welsh Regional Championships in 2018 and in the SEWBBA contest in Cardiff.
Kevin Started conducting the Beginner and Training bands in 2018 and is enjoying guiding the bands from strength to strength.
